Human Frailty, the Outdoors, and God

Outdoors, Human Frailty and GodNote: The following is a guest post from Neal Eckert.

Have you ever come face to face with how weak you are?

Those weaknesses become obvious when you start to think about your expenses. Essentially you work to afford things to better deal with your frailty and the frailty of those you love.

You need a car and gas because you’re limited in physical strength and time. You need a place to live to shelter yourself because the weakness of your body requires it. It would be silly not to mention food. So much of our day is spent making money so we can obtain food and prepare it.

We have artificial light because our eyesight is too weak to see in the dark. Artificial heat is necessary so we don’t freeze. We try to build around us a comfort zone with all our needs met.

Demands and pressures nearly crush us at times. There’s so much noise in our culture that it’s increasingly difficult to still our hearts.

Going to the outdoors is a great chance to take a deep breath and calm down. We know that we couldn’t make it very long out in the elements. His rocks and rivers will go on long after we’re gone from this earth. He will go on forever after the rocks and rivers are gone.

Being outdoors helps us to remember our weakness and His strength to meet that weakness.

He understands far more than we do. He knows that our greatest weakness can’t be remedied through all the needs we constantly feel forced to clamor for.

Going back to nature reminds us of the source of all creation. No, not the seemingly impersonal power behind it, but the person behind it. The person of love, who deeply desires to give you what will solve your greatest need and weakness… Himself.

Questions to consider:

Are your lesser needs keeping you from meeting your greatest need?

If so, what is the single greatest step you could take to change for the better?
