Casting Off My Religion

By on August 1, 2016

A reflection from A.W. Tozer’s The Pursuit of God By Jonathan Leonard

Two thoughts for today from “The Pursuit of God”, both have tremendous blessings with terrible consequences for myself:

“It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.” A.W. Tozer

“I want the presence of God Himself, or I don’t want anything at all to do with religion… I want all that God has or I don’t want any.” A.W. Tozer

It seems a bit cliche to say I’m casting off my religion, but in a time of crisis I’ve heard and felt thousands of voices crying out to God to heal my child and spare my family the anguish of death. Did I ask people to make sure they only prayed for us if they were evangelical? or Catholic? or did I say, please, make sure if you want to pray for Trinity that you tithe 10% of your net income….not gross…because we can’t afford your misguided or messed up theology?

Seems kind of absurd right? That’s the way we act inside our church buildings on a day to day basis. That’s the way I act inside my own head. I’m absolutely guilty of creating programs to teach about the things of God while relying on myself rather than prayerfully considering God’s will in the moment. For a moment in time, the walls of our buildings were torn to the ground and the vision of God’s family broke through from Heaven to appear here on earth. People were awoken from their beds in the middle of the night to get down on their knees and cry out for a miracle.

We live by a set of rules that has nothing to do with the raw desire of our hearts to be closer to God. It’s by God’s grace alone that any of us are even close. So in this please let me extend my Grace to you in everything. For His Grace is infinite and can no longer be ignored in my life from this day forward.

“Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

2 Corinthians 12:8-9
